Applying pace layers to career paths
How thinking about the speed of a career can you help create a framework for professional development across any organisation.
One year on and what next for remote working?
Since the UK locked down 52 weeks ago, Clearleft folks have been working fully remotely. As the vaccine works its magic, in a few months time we’ll be able to move back into our studio. What happens then?
Shining a light on Neon
Design by Clearleft on behalf of EngineeringUK, Neon breaks down stereotypes about engineering careers through inspirational case studies and experiences. A cause close to my heart, as a former engineer.
The importance of putting your champions on a pedestal
A champion is the person in your client’s organisation who can pinpoint the barriers to a great solution going live. Champions are obstacle clearers, problem insulators and praise singers. Find them and treat them with the reverence they deserve.
Conference diversity from an organiser’s perspective
Clearleft we know we have a responsibility to the industry to help redress the gender balance, and that means putting together diverse line-ups at our conferences. This is much easier said than done, but difficult doesn’t mean impossible.
The Ampersand Story
Why and how I put together Ampersand, the UK’s first conference dedicated specifically to web typography.
Fontdeck is go!
I’m extremely proud to say that two weeks ago Fontdeck opened its doors to the type-loving public. It’s been a long time in coming – too long I’d admit – but Fontdeck is now live and I’m hugely excited about what’s to come.
Why designers should and shouldn’t code
At Clearleft, our designers do not mark up their own designs. We require that they can all code well, but they never touch a line of production HTML. Why should our designers be able to code but not be required to do so?
Ten design principles of Dieter Rams
Earlier this month, Clearleft went on a company outing to the Design Museum in London. There we spent some quality time perusing the work of the influential former Braun industrial designer, Dieter Rams. These are his ten principles for good design.

This year’s dConstruct is looking brilliant. We’ve got a stellar lineup, four great workshops and now you can win a ticket to the conference just by customising one of our special badges.
Deviating from process
We at Clearleft are starting to enjoy deviating from process. Skipping steps, changing the order, adding extra steps, using different tools. This all keeps us fresh, but it also helps eliminate the production line approach it’s so easy to fall into.
Mental Models workshop with Indi Young
Clearleft and Indi Young are putting on a Mental Models workshop.
CSS and Ajax Workshops
Clearleft is doing a couple of public workshops at the end of January, here in Brighton. Andy Budd and Jeremy Keith will be training folk on CSS Mastery and Bulletproof Ajax respectively. Also check out Web Directions North conference.

Just a quick a note to all budding freelancers in the Brighton area to get your work down to the Portfolio Clinic tonight, where Clearleft and a host of other local creative companies will be on hand to offer advice.
South by Southwest panel picker
It’s still August and SxSW is already appearing over the horizon. You can buy tickets now, but the big news is that this year’s panel picker is now live. Also, we’ve got sage advice for getting the most out of dConstruct 2007.
dConstruct 2007
I’ve just come back from holiday, and the Clearleft office is a-buzz with early preparations for this year’s dConstruct conference.
Talking type at SxSW
First thing on Tuesday morning, I’ll be presenting Web Typography Sucks with the venerable Mark Boulton. Also that day is Helvetica the Movie. And on Saturday there’s the Great British Booze-up.
d.Construct Thursday socials
The d.Construct conference in Brighton is approaching rapidly (don’t I just know it; so much to do, so little time) and many attendees are coming down on the Thursday. As such, attendees are looking for places and people to meet on Thursday evening.
Clearleft is hiring
We need a talented producer/information architect to join our team in Brighton.
d.Construct schedule and podcast
As you’ve probably heard by now, we at Clearleft are organising another d.Construct conference, set for Friday 8th September this year. We’ve just released the schedule and published a podcast.
Post d.Constructivism
So d.Construct is over. It all seemed to go swimmingly well and there has been a fantastic positive response from everyone who attended.
A new beginning
After months of preparation I’m immensely pleased to announce that Andy Budd, Jeremy Keith and I have joined forces to form Clearleft, which officially launched on Monday.
