Cavendish wins Stage 5 of the Tour de France

This is the first British stage win since David Millar in 2003, and apparently the first win from a bunch sprint since Barry Hoban in 1975.

I like Cav. He may be a Manx but you’d be forgiven for thinking he was a Manc. His supreme confidence flirts with arrogance, but at least he walks the walk: 18 pro wins in the last 18 months including two stages in the Giro d’Italia (plus a gift to a team mate), and now this stage win in Le Tour. That and his position as world champion madison rider with Bradley Wiggins.

Update: Cav wins Stage 8 as well!

mark is indeed looking like the next mcewen. he’s also a former bmx racer and cut his teeth on track races. he’s got the killer instinct and doesn’t really need a lead out train of his own to sprint from. he’s one of the fastest i’ve seen in the last 50m.

Not so sure I agree that he is flirting with arrogance… he is good and confidence comes with that… but when interviewed he is always pretty fair in giving credit to other team members etc. Will be interesting to see how he progresses in the future.
