A pleasing number of people have been clamouring for this: the track listing to my annual compilation, ‘The Best Songs I Bought In 2006 Ever’. It was another good year – remember this is compiled from music I bought this year, but was not necessarily released this year.

These tracks just about squeeze on to a CD, so if you’d like a copy, put together your own compilation of the year and send it to me – you’ll get a copy of the above in return. Email me for details. Update: I stuck these in an iMix for your iTunes delectation.

Forgive my presumptiousness, but isn’t your offer blatantly and overtly illegal?

Mark – I forgive your presumptiousness but I’m less inclined to forgive your clinging to anonymity. My offer of an exchange may be illegal – I’m not a lawyer so I don’t know for sure.
But the fact remains that people have been exchanging mix tapes since home recording was invented and – despite their claims to the contrary – it hasn’t done the music industry any harm; the opposite is far more likely to be true.
Anyone who offers to exchange a compilation with me will be a music fan and someone, like me, who is on the look out for more music to buy. The only people impinged by any potential illegality are precisely the same people who will benefit from me seeking out new music. It’s not as if I’m uploading these tracks for all and sundry to download.

This is free viral advertising (and the iMix gives us one button with which to buy every track here). Music companies wet themselves trying to get stuff like this going on.
If they prefer, we can all listen to music on our own, never share a CD, never talk about it. Or they can get over themselves, and realise they’re in the business of creating culture. You can’t own culture. Culture only exists because of the people who engage with it.
Yay to CSS, btw. “CSS Suxxx” is my new soundtrack to figuring out IE bugs.

Much enjoying the music chap – thanks very much. The usual high quality stuff.
In response to ‘Mark’ – I normally end up buying at least 2 Album’s (sometimes more) on the strengh of Rich’s annual compilations. Now that’s not very harmful to anyone, is it? Except my bank balance of course. But then, I’m a music fan.
