Underworld typography

Underworld recently put out some 12" singles of their more recent download only releases.

Designed by Tomato, the art and design collective co-founded by Rick Smith and Karl Hyde of Underworld, I love the type-based designs. They’ve used Plantin to create striking black-on-white artwork.

Clearly they’ve messed about loads with the type, and much of Vanilla Monkey is almost illegible, however as the label on the vinyl shows, they’ve also put the effort into getting the details right. Where information is required to be conveyed, it is done so in a clear and quite beautiful manner.

Oh, and the music’s pretty damn fine too.

I spotted these on your flickr stream this morning, Rich, and you’re right: they’re very, very well done. The details really are stunning, with simple things (like hung quote marks) being offset perfectly against the more abstract pieces.
